"Extraordinary how potent cheap music is"
-Noel Coward
I was moved when I heard this quote over the radio, I’d say its more than 10 years ago. I wrote it on one of my notebooks (for stuff that I come across with or anything crazy that crosses my mind) and didn’t really have any reason for believing the quote until recently.
About a decade or so ago, the music was magnificent and I can still feel the euphoria upon hearing those songs (some may disagree, but tap with me and perhaps you’ll get the rhythm of my thoughts). Songs that have turned up recently are rather irritating to a musicians ears and I can much less imagine the disgust of poets upon hearing the repetitive nonsense. Why, even a six year old can come up with even better lyrics (and to think that the only background they have with poetry are nursery rhymes)!
And now the disease has clearly spread. Several groups have turned up with ear slashing songs and have actually made it their bread and butter for quite an amount of time (pray they don’t amass any platinum awards).
No I have not written any song that has actually had the opportunity to make someone else’s ears bleed. And no I have not the courage (nor the croc skin face) to leave the world to hear of my ramblings and ranting of melodies. But how these people who are unmistakeably tone deaf gather tons of listeners and supporters who do not end up with ear specialists remains a mystery to me.
And can you believe how like a weed they suddenly spring to life amidst all the perfection of music? And as weeds they do put an arrest to the blooms of wonderful music.
*sigh* Why must cheap music be so potent?
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
-Noel Coward
He who cannot keep a note must indeed take that long walk — away from me.
